PreLAS Success Story Language Academy of Sacramento
“Our Dual Immersion school has proudly served our community for 21 years, and for much of that time, we’ve utilized the PreLAS assessment as an initial assessment for currently enrolled TK and Kindergarten students. This data helps us to create linguistically balanced class lists.”

What challenges do you have in your school specific to language learning?
At times, it can be challenging to find students who are proficient in Spanish, which is essential for maintaining the linguistic balance in our classes.
Why did you select PreLAS?
The PreLAS assessment is a vital tool for incoming TK and kindergarten students. The data collected from this assessment is crucial for our teachers, who use it to create linguistically balanced classrooms.
How is PreLAS used in your organization?
We administer the PreLAS assessment following our annual enrollment lottery to evaluate the enrolled transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten students. The results are then shared with teachers, who use the data to create class lists for the upcoming school year. If new students enroll in TK through first grade throughout the year, we may administer PreLAS again. The results help teachers identify strengths and areas where additional support may be needed.
Which PreLAS features are particularly important to your organization? How do they address specific concerns and needs?
The “Say What You Hear” section is valuable for identifying any enunciation or speech issues. Additionally, the writing section is crucial for assessing key skills in kindergarteners, such as the ability to write their name and hold a pencil correctly.
In recent years, we transitioned to the online version, which has significantly streamlined the scoring process.

Students enjoy the vibrant, colorful illustrations throughout the assessment. The game board featured in the pre-literacy component is particularly engaging for them.

We use PreLAS as an initial assessment for currently enrolled TK and kindergarten students.
