Why PreLAS?

PreLAS is the most widely used early childhood language proficiency assessment in the United States, evaluating hundreds of thousands three-, four-, and five-year-olds each year for the purpose of English learner identification.

  • The PreLAS assessment is an accurate, valid and reliable measure, as it does not over-identify nor under-identify, English learners.
  • There are no associated “manipulatives” to maintain for testing.
  • The results for the PreLAS are easy to interpret and are available within minutes of test completion. The PreLAS Online assessment is delivered via the DRC INSIGHT portal, which delivers over 45 million online assessments across the United States annually.
  • DRC continues to invest in the assessment to provide clients with the most up to date technology and assessment measure.
  • Where is the PreLAS Used?
  • The PreLAS (English and Spanish) is the most widely used language proficiency assessment system used in preK programs across the United States.
  • Many LEAs opt to use the PreLAS for EL identification including in Arizona, California, Connecticut (DRC Title III contract), Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin
  • Texas adopted the PreLAS in 2019 as the single state assessment for the identification of preK3, preK4 and Kindergarten English learners (students who in Texas are now referred to as Emergent Bilingual students)
